The four retrogrades people ask about

A retrograde is perspective, not reversal: as the Earth passes a slower planet, that planet seems to slide backward for a while. Astrologers read the period as one for review rather than as a warning.

Mercury Retrograde

Three to four times a year, about three weeks each

The most famous retrograde and the most overhyped. Mercury governs communication, so the period is traditionally used for going back over things: rereading, reconfirming, revising and finishing what is open instead of launching something new.

A good time for

Editing, reconnecting with people, tying up loose ends

Go carefully with

Signing without reading, and assuming a message landed as intended

Nothing is destined to go wrong. The tradition asks for more care with details and with wording, which is good advice in any month.

Venus Retrograde

About every nineteen months, for roughly six weeks

Venus governs love and values, so this period is read as a review of both: what you like, what you spend on and who you keep close. Old connections often resurface, and the tradition treats them as material for reflection rather than instructions to restart.

A good time for

Reassessing a relationship, reviewing a budget

Go carefully with

Drastic makeovers and large impulse purchases

It is a time for getting clear on what matters to you. It is not a ban on love or spending.

Mars Retrograde

About every two years, for roughly two months

Mars governs drive, so its backward-looking stretch is associated with effort that does not convert into progress at the usual rate. The traditional advice is to redirect rather than push harder against a wall.

A good time for

Rethinking strategy, resting, rebuilding energy

Go carefully with

Forcing a confrontation, or launching anything that relies on momentum

Irritation tends to surface. Tradition treats it as information about what has gone unaddressed, not as something to act on the same afternoon.

Saturn Retrograde

Once a year, for about four and a half months

Saturn governs structure and responsibility, so its retrograde is read as an annual audit: which commitments are working, which routines have gone stale and where the foundations need attention.

A good time for

Reviewing systems, fixing foundations, recommitting to what matters

Go carefully with

Making big structural commitments without looking at the fine print

Because it happens every year, this is one of the least dramatic retrogrades. It is best read as a long, quiet checkup.

Cycles that keep coming round

The sky repeats itself. These are the cycles that return often enough to notice.

New moon About every 29.5 days, where the cycle traditionally resets. Full moon Two weeks after each new moon, the culmination of the cycle.
Eclipses Two seasons a year, usually in pairs. Read as quicker change, not as bad luck.
Sign seasons The Sun enters a new sign about every thirty days and sets the season's theme.

We do not list retrograde or eclipse dates. They change every year and need an ephemeris to state correctly, and we would rather describe the events accurately than print numbers we cannot stand behind.

Retrogrades Are an Optical Effect

A retrograde is what happens when one planet appears to drift backward against the background stars. It is perspective, not a real reversal. Imagine overtaking a slower car on the highway: for a moment it seems to slide backward relative to the scenery, even though both cars are moving forward. The Earth overtakes the outer planets, and is overtaken by the inner ones, in just this way.

Astrologers read retrogrades as periods of review. The planet's themes do not stop, but they turn inward: Mercury retrograde invites revisiting communication, Venus retrograde revisiting values and relationships, Mars retrograde rethinking strategy, Saturn retrograde an annual audit of structures.

Why We Do Not Publish a Retrograde Calendar Here

Retrograde dates differ each year and need an ephemeris to state correctly. Rather than print numbers we cannot stand behind, this page describes what each retrograde is and how the tradition reads it. If you want exact dates, use a reputable ephemeris, and compare two sources: a day of difference is common because of time zones.

Eclipses, Briefly

A solar eclipse happens at a new moon when the Moon passes directly in front of the Sun; a lunar eclipse happens at a full moon when the Moon passes through the Earth's shadow. They come in seasons about six months apart and tend to appear in pairs. Astrologers read them as accelerated points of change: a nudge to move on something, not a disaster. The astronomy is reliable; the interpretation is tradition.

Sun Sign Seasons

About every thirty days the Sun moves into a new sign and a new "season" begins. The page above shows the current one. During Virgo season, for example, astrologers say the general mood turns toward organization and improvement, and during Libra season, toward relationships and fairness. It is one of the gentlest and most useful timing ideas in astrology, since it only asks you to notice what the current sign is about.

How to Take Sky Events Lightly

There is nothing to fear from any of this. No retrograde has been shown to affect electronics, contracts or relationships. The value is in the habit of periodically looking back and reviewing, which is useful at any time. If you find yourself anxious about an upcoming event, read our Medical Disclaimer and take a break from the sky for a few days.

How an event reads for you

That depends on where it falls in your own chart. Start with your sign, then build your chart for the full picture.
