New Moon

Setting intentions, quiet planning, starting small

The Moon is between the Earth and the Sun, so its lit side faces away and the sky is dark. Astrologically, it is the blank page of the cycle: a good time to decide what the next four weeks are for, privately, before telling anybody.

What this phase is traditionally good for

Setting intentions, quiet planning, starting small

What Happens at a New Moon

At the new moon the Moon lies almost exactly in line with the Sun, so its sunlit half faces away from Earth and it is lost in the Sun's glare. It rises and sets with the Sun and cannot be seen. Because the Moon's orbit is tilted slightly, it usually passes just above or below the Sun. On the rare occasions it does not, there is a solar eclipse.

The Traditional Reading

The new moon is the start of the cycle, and in astrology it is a blank page. The tradition recommends working privately at this stage: deciding what the coming month is for, writing it down and holding off on announcements. Energy is low, and the tradition treats that as an invitation to plan rather than push.

A practical way to use it is to write down two or three intentions and one small action for each. Return to them at the first quarter to see whether they still feel right.

The Sign Matters Too

Because the Sun and Moon are together at a new moon, they share a sign, and astrologers say the new moon takes its theme from that sign. A new moon in Virgo is read as a good moment to organize and refine; in Sagittarius, to plan travel or learning; in Capricorn, to set long-term goals. This page covers the phase itself, and the sign adds a layer you can look up for any given month.

A Simple New Moon Practice

Many people use the new moon as a monthly reset. A version that takes five minutes: write down three things you want from the coming four weeks, choose one small action for each, and put those actions in your calendar. You do not need candles or a ritual, and there is no rule that says it has to happen on the exact night. The value is the monthly rhythm.
