First Quarter

Decisions, problem-solving, adjusting the plan

Half of the visible disc is lit. This is the point in the cycle associated with friction: the first real obstacle appears and a decision has to be made about pushing on or changing course.

What Happens at First Quarter

A week after the new moon, the Moon has completed a quarter of its orbit, and we see exactly half of its face lit, the right half as seen from the Northern Hemisphere. It stands high in the sky at sunset and sets around midnight. "Quarter" refers to how far through the cycle it is, not to how much is lit.

The Traditional Reading

Astrologers treat the first quarter as the phase of friction. The enthusiasm of the start has worn off, the first real obstacle appears and a decision has to be made: adjust the plan, push through or drop it. Many people find that this is exactly what happens with new projects at about the one-week mark, whatever the Moon is doing.

The useful question to ask is what is in the way and what is one practical adjustment that would help. Quarters are traditionally about choosing action, not about waiting.

Ways People Use This Phase

The first quarter works as a checkpoint. A few honest questions: is the goal I set still the right one, what has gotten in the way, and what single change would help most? People who find the lunar rhythm useful often treat this point as the one to revise the plan, not to abandon it.
