The Three Modalities

Cardinal, fixed and mutable: how each sign behaves when something has to change.

Three Ways of Handling Change

If the elements describe what a sign is made of, the modalities describe what it does when something changes. There are three: cardinal signs start, fixed signs sustain and mutable signs adapt. Every sign is one element crossed with one modality, which is why there are exactly twelve of them (four elements times three modalities).

The names come from the seasons. A cardinal sign opens each season, a fixed sign sits at its midpoint, and a mutable sign closes it as it turns into the next. Aries begins spring, Taurus sits at its heart, and Gemini carries it toward summer, and the pattern repeats around the wheel.

Why Modalities Explain Same-Element Differences

Aries, Leo and Sagittarius are all fire, yet Aries charges, Leo holds the stage and Sagittarius wanders off to see what is over the hill. The modality is the reason. It is the difference between a spark, a steady flame and a drifting ember.

When you look at your own chart, count the modalities as you did the elements. Plenty of mutable placements suggest flexibility and possibly scattered commitments. A fixed emphasis suggests persistence and possibly stubbornness. A cardinal emphasis suggests initiative and possibly too many beginnings.

A Useful Self-Check

The Starter, Keeper or Shapeshifter quiz lets you test yourself before you look at your chart. Compare the result with your placements and see whether the two agree. When they do not, that is worth a closer look: you may be living against your own grain, or another planet may simply be louder than your Sun.

How to Use the Modalities in Practice

Modalities are useful for teams and households as much as for individuals. A group made up entirely of cardinal types will launch plenty of projects and finish few. A group of fixed types will be reliable and slow to change. A mutable group will adapt well and may lack direction. Knowing which style you lean on can help you ask for the contribution you are missing.
