How the Match Is Built
Enter two birthdays and the tool works out each person's Sun sign from the Sun's real position, so anyone born near a boundary is placed correctly. It then compares the two signs using the traditional relationships between elements. Fire and air feed each other, as do earth and water. Signs of the same element share a wavelength. Signs opposite one another on the wheel attract and challenge in equal measure.
The headline score follows from that relationship, and five sub-scores (Spark, Friendship, Conversation, Trust and Staying power) vary around it in a fixed, explainable way. The same pair always gets the same answer. No score is invented for effect.
What a Sun-Sign Match Cannot Tell You
It is worth being frank: studies that have tested whether sun signs predict the success of relationships have not found that they do. A Sun sign is one layer of one person, and relationships depend on many things: communication, values, timing, effort and plain luck. Astrologers who compare two people seriously look at the whole of both charts, particularly the Moon, Venus and Mars, and how they interact, a practice called synastry.
That is why this tool gives you a "what helps" line as well as a score. The useful part of a match is not the percentage but the conversation it starts about how each of you handles closeness, change and conflict.
Going Deeper
If the two of you are curious, build each birth chart in the Birth Chart Studio and compare Moon signs and Venus signs side by side. The Astrology Guides include an article on what two charts can honestly say about two people, which is a good place to set expectations.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a low score mean we should not be together? No. The score describes how two Sun-sign temperaments typically interact and says nothing about how well two real people will get on. Why do some pairs share the same score? Scores come from the element relationship, so every pair with the same relationship starts from the same number. What else should we look at? Each other's Moon and Venus signs, which you can find in the Birth Chart Studio.
