Two Calendars, Two Sets of Signs

Western astrology divides the year by the Sun's path and gives you one of twelve signs. Chinese astrology divides time by the lunar calendar and gives each year an animal and an element. Because both run on your birth date, it is natural to compare them, but they are separate traditions that measure different cycles and are not designed to agree.

Why Chinese New Year Matters

The Chinese zodiac year does not begin on January 1. It begins at the Chinese New Year, which falls on a different date each year between late January and the middle of February. If you were born in January or early February, your animal may belong to the previous year. This tool uses the actual New Year date for each year from 1930 to 2040 and tells you when it applies.

The twelve animals repeat in a cycle, and the five elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water) move through in pairs of years, which together make a 60-year cycle. The year's yin or yang polarity alternates: even years are yang and odd years are yin.

Why the Sun Sign Needs the Year

Sign boundaries are not fixed dates. The Sun's crossing of each boundary shifts by up to a day from year to year, so someone born on the 20th of March may be a Pisces in one year and an Aries in another. The tool calculates the Sun's real longitude for your birth year and warns you if you are close to a cusp, in which case your birth time matters too.

How to Use the Pair

Read them as two lenses. The Western sign tends to describe temperament and motivation; the Chinese animal tends to describe social style and the texture of your particular year. Where they agree, you have a strong signal. Where they disagree, you have a richer portrait. Neither one predicts anything. Both are prompts for reflection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Chinese animal differ from the year I was born? If you were born in January or early February, the Chinese year may not have started yet. Can I use a date before 1930? The tool's calendar table covers 1930 through 2040, so it will tell you when a year is outside the range. Is my Sun sign on the cusp? If the tool flags it, you are within about one degree of a sign boundary, and your birth time may decide the answer.
