Venus and Mars: What You Want and How You Go After It

When people want astrology to explain their love lives, they usually ask for their Sun sign. It is the wrong place to look. The Sun describes identity. Attraction, affection and pursuit are handled by two other planets: Venus and Mars. Reading them together gives a far more specific picture of how a person behaves in relationships.

Venus: what draws you in

Venus governs attraction, taste and value. Its sign describes what you find beautiful, how you express care and what you think is worth having. It is the placement behind answers to questions like “what do I find attractive?” and “what makes me feel loved?”

Some quick illustrations:

  • Venus in Taurus shows affection through touch, food and dependable routines.
  • Venus in Gemini falls for wit and conversation, and needs variety.
  • Venus in Scorpio wants depth and loyalty and is wary of anything casual.
  • Venus in Aquarius values friendship and independence, and is allergic to clinginess.

Mars: how you pursue it

Mars is drive. Its sign describes how you go after what you want, how you argue and what happens when something resists you. In relationships, it covers the pursuing, initiating side of attraction.

  • Mars in Aries is direct and fast, and does not wait to be asked.
  • Mars in Cancer approaches sideways and protects what it wants fiercely.
  • Mars in Libra negotiates and charms, and dislikes open conflict.
  • Mars in Capricorn plays the long game and works steadily toward the goal.

Why they so often differ from your Sun

The two planets have very different relationships to the Sun. Venus never strays more than about 47 degrees from it, so it can only be in your Sun sign or one of two signs on either side, which gives five possibilities. Mars has no such limit and can be in any sign at all. So Mars is where you will most often find a surprise: a gentle Pisces Sun with an assertive Aries Mars, or a steady Taurus with a quick-tempered Gemini Mars.

Both move slowly enough that your birth date settles them, which is useful: you do not need your birth time to look them up.

The two together

The interesting part is how Venus and Mars interact. A few patterns astrologers point out:

  • Same element (say, fire and fire): what you want and how you pursue it are aligned, and the style is consistent.
  • Supportive elements (fire and air, earth and water): they reinforce each other.
  • Clashing temperaments (fire and water): you may want one thing and pursue it in a style that does not fit, which can feel like a tug of war. That is not a flaw, but it is an area to be aware of.

Use it as a conversation, not a verdict

The best use of Venus and Mars is as shared vocabulary. Telling a partner “my Venus is in Virgo, so I show love by fixing things, not by saying it” can be a helpful sentence, whether or not either of you believes the planets cause anything.
