Name Numerology: The Three Numbers Hidden in Your Name
A birth date gives you one number. A name gives you three. In numerology, each letter carries a value from 1 to 9, and adding them up in different ways produces the expression number, the soul urge number and the personality number. It is a simple system, and it is worth knowing how it actually works before trusting any of the results.
The letter chart
The Pythagorean system counts through the alphabet in rows of nine:
| 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A J S | B K T | C L U | D M V | E N W | F O X | G P Y | H Q Z | I R |
The system is named after Pythagoras, although it took its present form in the early twentieth century, long after him.
The three numbers
- Expression number (every letter): your natural talents and what you are here to do.
- Soul urge number (vowels only): your inner motivation, the thing you want underneath everything else.
- Personality number (consonants only): the impression you give others.
Each total is reduced by adding its digits until you reach a single digit, keeping 11, 22 and 33 as master numbers, as in the life path calculation.
A worked example
Take the name Mia Lopez.
- M=4, I=9, A=1 → Mia = 14. L=3, O=6, P=7, E=5, Z=8 → Lopez = 29. Total 43, reduced to 4 + 3 = 7. That is the expression number.
- Vowels: I(9) + A(1) + O(6) + E(5) = 21, reduced to 3. That is the soul urge number.
- Consonants: M(4) + L(3) + P(7) + Z(8) = 22, which is a master number and stays 22. That is the personality number.
You can check this with the Name Numerology Calculator, which shows the letter counts too.
Which name should you use?
This is where numerologists disagree. The traditional view says to use the full name on your birth certificate, since that is the name you were given. Others say to use the name you actually go by, since that is the one people use and that you identify with. A common compromise is to calculate both and notice which one feels more accurate, or which shows up in the details of each reading.
Two technical wrinkles
The letter Y. Some systems count Y as a vowel when it makes a vowel sound (as in “Lynn” or “Mary”) and as a consonant otherwise. Others always treat it as a consonant. This changes the soul urge and personality numbers for names with a Y, so be aware that different calculators can disagree.
Accents and spelling. Letters with accents are usually reduced to their base letter, and hyphens and spaces are ignored. Nicknames and alternate spellings give different numbers, which is one of the reasons the system cannot be taken literally.
A reasonable attitude
Name numerology rests on an arbitrary letter-to-number assignment, and changing a spelling changes the answer. That does not make it useless as a reflective exercise; it makes it a mirror rather than a measurement. If the description of your soul urge number makes you think about what you actually want, it has done something useful. If it feels wrong, you have lost nothing. Just keep it away from big decisions.
