Dreams about Elevators

Going up, going down and getting stuck between floors.

Readings to consider

  • An elevator is read as movement between levels of life: status, mood or stage. Direction matters, since rising suggests progress and falling suggests a dip.
  • Getting stuck is commonly read as feeling paused, between one chapter and the next.
  • An elevator that moves sideways or behaves strangely is read as a situation that does not follow the rules you expected.
  • Floors you did not know existed resemble the hidden-room dream: possibility you have not yet noticed.

No dream has one correct meaning. What the image meant to you, and what was on your mind that week, counts for more than any dictionary entry. Use this page to think with, not to diagnose.

Levels of Life

An elevator moves you between floors without effort, which is why it is read as a symbol of changing level: mood, status, stage of life. The reading turns on direction and control. Going up by choice is different from being taken somewhere you did not press for.

Stuck Between Floors

A stuck elevator is one of the commoner versions and is usually read as a pause: something is waiting to resolve. Ask what you are waiting on, and whether any part of it is within your control. Often the answer is a small action, such as a call you have been putting off.

A Practical Next Step

Write which floor you are on in life right now and which you would like to reach. The exercise takes a minute and tends to make the image less vague.
